What THE Great Physician Would Say & Do in the Current Medical Crisis
In our first essay in this series, we wrote about great physicians of past eras who recognized Nature being key to healing in individual ills, as well as in general epidemics. While we touched on eight prominent medics of the past five centuries, we could have added a few more from our files — several more with additional research.
At the same time, we admit that all manner of doctors over the ages have given praise — but all too often as lip service — to Nature while often ignoring her until all seems to be lost.
Two of our favorite Medics would readily say that “many are called, but few are chosen” to be True Doctors. Those or similar words from the mouths of Jan Van Helmont and Paracelsus would suggest that vast numbers of medical doctors acquire degrees and diplomas, certifications and licenses, etc. But, their “callings” have generally been personal and professional rather than spiritual and wholistic.
Van Helmont and Paracelsus believed Real Physician-Healers are called by God and work under the tutelage of Mother Nature. No doubt The Great Physician, Jesus Christ, would have agreed with them.
We can look back over the millennia and recall the words and works of the Christ and the Disciples. None of them ever attended medical school. The Disciples and the Seventy were trained as apprentices by Forces of Spirit, the Natural Mother, and the Great Teacher and Physician.
For ages and even into the present, great numbers of people have been healed without drugs or surgery — which often delay or distract from true healing. Without medical measures, the blind have been returned to sight, the deaf to opened ears, the paralyzed to walk. People have seen, heard, taken up their pallets and moved on through Natural means available everywhere to all.
“The art of medicine consists in amusing the patient,
while Nature cures the disease.”
Voltaire
What happened over the ages which prevents Nature from acting boldly every day in clinics?
Technological progress has caused society to materialize almost all parts of life and society. Along the way, we have forgotten or lost sight of the Spirit and Nature in our very midst. “The Kingdom of God is within you.” LK 17
The Healing Arts have been replaced by Medical Sciences. It is quite possible to have both co-existing and working together. Still, we must re-cognize and respect the Deeper Forces from which all life comes, to which it returns, and in which life exists moment by moment.
Real physicians do not rely on prescriptions, techniques, tests. They are more than prescribers and technicians. They are doctors [meaning teacher in Latin] and healers. Rabbis fit in this picture, as the word also means teacher and master. Much the same as ministers, who when acting in their truest sense, are also healers. Anciently, priests and healers, philosophers and magicians were all one and the same.
Christ was THE Great Physician, Revered Rabbi and Master, Teacher of Men and of Angels. Christ was also the Greatest Healer. Like him, True Doctors strive toward the God and Wholeness which He fully manifested in the flesh. Then, they seek to lift patients into their own fullness, not merely beyond bodily symptoms and ills.
Wholeness, Health, and Holiness all fit together even as the words come from the same root. A message which far too often is ignored in modern medicine — and modern life in general. Health, as a Course of Study, is unknown in standard medical schools. At the same, professional medical training is not required for us to share Healing and to grow into Wholeness.
We repeat Jesus Christ, the Disciples and the Seventy never attended medical school!
So to the original question:
What would THE Great Physician say about modern ills, especially the so-called Covid 19 epidemic?
In broad perspective, the following ideas stand forth from teachings of the Master and of the New Testament:
“For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.” MT 5
• Divine justice is always at work in individual lives, the whole human race, and the planet itself. It is Universal. There are no “accidents.” All is Cause and Effect. Divine Justice and Karma are simply others words for Cause and Effect.
Like it or not, we humans are forced to meet divine justice and karma — to pay off our debts to the last farthing. In one way or another, we are always Meeting Self: errors and mistreatment and abuse of our own selves, of others, and of the greater Whole. This is surely the case — or part of it — in the present time with the CV pandemic.
“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” 1 CO 6
• The human body as well as the planet are temples of the Divine. Body and planet are subject to karma in much the same ways.
Jesus Christ symbolically demonstrated a living picture for the ages in this regard, symbolic the state of the present ills of humankind:
“And the Jews’ passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables; And said unto them that sold doves, ‘Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house into a market.’” JN 2
In many ways, we moderns defile our personal temples and maybe even more so our collective
Temple Earth. We have been warned often over the years. And thus we do reap what we have sown.
“Is there any hope?” you ask.
“Afterward Jesus findeth him [the man he had healed] in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.” JN 5
• We must change our ways sooner or later. That may also require making restitution as well as paying penance — to Pay the Price — to Clear the Deck, so to speak. And to move on to balance and harmony in and around us.
But first and most obviously, we must turn away from our misdeeds — sins against Ourselves and our Neighbors, Planet and Nature.
It is Our misdeeds and Our karma which we are meeting at this moment and every moment throughout life.
“I do not say to you [to forgive], up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.” MT 18
• Forgiveness is a simple step to begin meeting karma. Yours, mine and ours.
By forgiveness, we give up judgment and release the past. At the same time, we accept what has been while we allow ourselves to live presently. Thence, we release the old and move towards our wholeness.
Ultimately, the answer to our predicament is really very simple. It is found in the Great Commandment. It is indeed quite simple, but hardly easy to fulfill.
“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” MT 22
• “Love is the answer,” according to my friend Barbara Bartley Baldwin.
“Love is the reason for medicine,” said the great physician of the 16th century, Paracelsus.
“He who loveth God love his brother also.” 1 JN 4
Love is not exclusive or separative. And Love is not just an idea or feeling. But, it also an action. And, it is something which we do without expectation of reward, financial or otherwise. Medicine as we know it today is largely a mercenary endeavor. Love which is paid for — often is called by another name.
Jesus Christ and the Disciples demonstrated love in many ways. Most poignantly they did so for the lame, sick and injured. They were the True Doctors of their time as their followers of all times are called to be. That includes all of us.
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples.” JN 13
• To Love one another — is our calling. To follow the Golden Rule, in other words. It is very simple, but not easy to act out especially in our separative, jaded world: a world enraptured with technology and science, desirous of more comfort and glamor, and distracted by speed and quantity.
We are called to Love all beings. We can accomplish that Work of Love in a most wonderful way. The Healing Way is to let the Magic of Nature flow through our souls, hearts and hands — just it did through Christ — THE Great Physician-Magician of all history.
We can emulate His work even in the present materialistic world in order to manifest Love and to move from the Age of Pisces to the New Age of Aquarius.
