Ghostriders in the Sky being a favorite traditional song, we decided to do a takeoff on the title. If there can be ghostriders in the sky, why not ghostwriters?

[Here is a link to a grand version of the song by a Swedish cowboy with a wonderful voice.]

But can such beings exist?

Human senses are quite limited. Color blindness can be used as an example so as to help us understand our general limitations. A few percent of the population are color blind, which means they cannot distinguish red, blue or green.

In a wider sense, we are all blind to hosts of forces. You might be able to think of a few.

There all sorts of sounds which animals hear but humans don’t. Your pet cat and dog tune into sounds beyond human range. Those critters also likely tune into ghostly ones from time to time.

Just consider that from a feeling-kinesthetic angle, we are quite unaware that our planet is rotating on its axis at 1000 miles an hour. At the same time, planet Earth is circling the Sun at nearly 70,000 miles per hour. Believe it or not, these are simple facts of which our senses are totally oblivious. There are many more.

“There are more things in heaven and Earth
than are dreamt of in your philosophy, Horatio.”
William Shakespeare, Hamlet

We must recognize that all of our senses are limited. At the same time, we ought to realize that there are gozillions of forces and lives which are too fine and subtle for us to sense.

Still, there are clairvoyants, seers and sages whose senses are heightened beyond the average human. A few of us can see, hear and sense presences beyond most of our imaginings. Meanwhile, many of us have sensed forces and presences near us time and again. But, we just couldn’t “put our fingers on them.”

Psychologist-philosopher William James long ago noted that, “Our normal waking consciousness … is but one special type of consciousness, whilst all about it, parted from it by the filmiest of screens, there lie potential forms of consciousness entirely different.… No account of the universe in its totality can be final which leaves these other forms of consciousness quite disregarded.” Varieties of Religious Experience

So some day, ghosts and goblins, angels and demons, devas and fairies will regain general respect as they have had in many, many societies over the ages. Even today, they are yet known to societies which are in closer sympathy with the natural world and less distracted by urban sprawl and activity, traffic and technology, television and telephones.

The scientific community denies such beings. If they can’t be measured or weighed or captured, they are ignored. That makes them no less real — but only elusive and difficult to perceive.

Like James, the anthropologist Walter Evans-Wentz has told us that, “Fairyland exists as a super-normal state of consciousness into which men and women may enter temporarily in dreams, trances, or in various ecstatic conditions; or for an indefinite period at death. Fairies … appear to be … intelligent forces.” The Fairy-Faith of the Celtic Countries

Modern society has accorded us all sorts of advantages and benefits, but caused us to lose touch with nature and natural living itself. The wonders of technology have brought us artificial turfs, artificial trees, and artificial living. But, the march of civilization has separated us from the mysteries and magic of nature.

Thus, the subtlest aspects of magic that were known far and wide for eons have slipped from our hands — so to speak. But, not from all hands and hearts, minds and eyes.

We personally know nothing about ghostriders. But, we have some understandings of ghostwriters — and similar folks.

On a little contemplation, it is clear that artists, composers, writers and thinkers often work with angels and devas — ghostly presences, we might call them. Whether they realize it or not, the works of such individuals are on occasion influenced by saints and sages of past times.

One of our heroes, Thomas Edison, has said, “Ideas come from space.”

Those few words have broad implications. They give hints as to how telepathy occurs. How two people can think the same thing at one moment. Aha!

They also help explain how Great Ideas are impressed upon humanity. Those ideas first touch inventors, composers, leaders and the like. Then, they filter down unto observers and commentators. And eventually, they become part of public awareness and activity.

It may appear that Thomas Edison originated the idea of a phonograph, light bulb, and movie camera. But, those ideas — which have changed human life immeasurably — in fact, emanated from far beyond small human minds; however imposing they may appear.

In a similar way, great works of art and music and literature are originated and impelled from above. Then, they are impressed upon willing souls and talented minds to slowly take form in the physical realm.

To be sure, there are vast numbers of ideas — positive and uplifting as well as negative and disturbing — which “float” amidst the ethers. Artists and composers, writers and inventors naturally and often quite unconsciously attract ones which fit themselves.

We attract all manner of ideas and experience according to our own nature. In the subtle realms, Like Attracts Like.

So, we are more than convinced that all creative efforts are collaborative ventures. On the subject of writing, we have concluded that the best of books write themselves — so to speak. They have lives of their own because their essence and substance belong to great beings, devas and angels who are in fact Ghostwriters in the Sky.

For the creative sorts in our midst. We really can add to the weight of goodness in the world: By raising our sights, asking for direction from the highest presences on the planet, and preparing to act as their instrument.

Ghostwriters in the Sky and their cohorts are ready to send ever more wonderful Ideas to nourish, comfort and inspire humanity and thus the whole creation.
