Calendar Moms — Time for Change

In our last essay, we suggested that the public should work at giving greater recognition to the women and especially the Mothers of the world.

At the same time, we shared the observation: While the days of the week were named in orderly and meaningful fashion, the calendar months — January to December in the West — were designated without much rule or meaning. The days of the week are named for the Sun, Moon and inner Planets.

Why not put Mothers, Moons and Months together to give sense to our calendar and due to the Fair Sex!

In the meantime, we were reminded of a bit of a craze which followed upon a British film of 2003. Calendar Girls was based on a true story of a group of middle-aged Yorkshire women who produced a calendar of nudes — themselves. Their goal was to raise money for Leukemia Research through the Women’s Institutes after the death of the husband of one of their members. There calendar was variation on the pinups and starlet calendars of old.

Calendar Girls calendars step aside, it is time for Calendar Moms calendars.

We have produced a prototype for the Calendar which might be considered Version 1.0. May many others follow.

Our first thought was to use images of relatively ageless Mothers — like Mary, Nature, Eve, Lilith, Sophia, Saints of the past, etc. But, we decided to draw from pictures of Mothers from recent history and current times to which most people could relate.

No such calendar will suit everyone, but will at least get the idea flowing in our midst. You may have ideas for Moms with Months which are superior to our own. We invite you to peruse our Calendar Moms, and share observations and comments to improve the concept and others to bring the idea fruition. Share your nominations for Calendar Moms.
